Gilsam Frezin (gilsum frxzin)

(a.k.a. Gil)

"Yah, we can guard your caravan. Yah we know the route. How much is it going to cost? Let me answer that with another question. What are you hauling, how much of it, and who do we need to worry about other than bandits and creatures?" responded the grizzled veteran of a warrior.   "It's cloth and clothing from throughout the area. Mostly good quality. In addition we have some glass and pottery, and a few artisan works. All said we have seven wagons, two of which are just food for the journey. As far as I know, no one is after us," stated the young merchant.   "So far as you know? I sure hope not, otherwise the journey will get much more expensive along the way. You know what I mean?"   "I get your point, sir."   "That will be 500 gold plus food. Each way," explained the mercenary.   "500?!" exclaimed the merchant.   "500."   The merchant sighed and reluctantly slid over a bag of coins after counting it, "Here you go. We need to leave in the morning.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Gil has seen several battles and has a number of scars to show for it. Normally around town he wears the clothes common to men in the area, a light jerkin, brown pants, good boots, and a hat. When working he wears the same hat, but splint mail, heavy travelling boots, and a heavy cloak.   His brown hair and worn look does not attract many women, but he does have opportunities to court.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Gilsam Frezin is a human mercenary captain who leads a group of about 15 mercenaries, usually doing caravan protection, but will sometimes take on other work depending on the situation. He has no interest in large scale war, and prefers to keep his team out of combat. However, he is skilled in combat, especially with his long spear, long sword, or flail, all of which he travels with. Normally wearing splint mail, his team is similarly equiped with a sword, bow or spear, and chain, chainmail, splint, or breast plate. Each member of the team is responsible for providing their own gear, while the company provides food.   Gilsam worked as a guard and sargeant for the Grayton's Lot guard, and saw a fair bit of action in the wilds to the south of the city fighting orcs, and skirmishes among the various city states. In addition, he also worked as a marine for a year in the navy hunting pirates in the Central Isles. As such, he is proficient with all maner of common weapons from swords to bows to clubs to slings and everything in between.   After 12 years of service to the city he retired. Unlike most guards, he saved most of his money and used it to found his mercenary company of which he takes 20% up front for himself, 10 percent for the company, and divides out the remainder equally to everyone on the mission, including himself. So in the example above it would break down to 100 for himself up front, 50 for the company, 350 divided by 15 for him and the soldiers for a total of 23 each, and any remainders, 5 gold, going into the company pot.   While 23 gold for 4 months may seem meager, this is good pay for a mercenary who has no other expenses than equipment upkeep. In addition, any loot found on bandits or raiders is shared equally across the board, so another 10 to 20 gold per trip is not uncommon.   The members of the company are all treated well, train together frequently, and are expected to maintain discipline and sobriety. Punishment is normally permanent banishment from the team, even if in the middle of a mission. Rarely are there ever issues as watching a single banishment in the middle of a trip is sufficient motivation to behave and do well for the group.   During his early days, Gil grew up as any other kid in Grayton's Lot, playing, causing mischief and so on. Nothing was remarkable about him as a boy. Once he became a guard, he quickly rose through the ranks as a good guard, trainer, and quick to deal with issues properly. He gained a great deal of skill and leadership during the year leading a team of marines in the Central Isles, and successfully returned with a fair bit of wealth.   Now Gil make the Golden Cloak a base of operations when in the city. As guards for caravans are in high demand, and his team has a good reputation, work is not hard to find, but he is expensive.   Gil enjoys his time in town, taking in the sights of the market. Upgrading his equipement when he can afford it, and always seeking to find a good suit of magic armor. To date, he usually carries a number of healing potions, but does not have any other magic items. He is always serious in negotiations or when working, but can crack a joke with the best of them when sitting around a fire, or having a drink at the bar.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Gil is hoping to eventually leave the mercenary life and retire in Grayton's Lot, perhaps open a small shop selling leather wares or leather goods. He enjoys making items in leather, and has a small bench and set of tools in his apartment off the docks in Grayton's Lot.
