Drifting Swamps Settlement in Karenth | World Anvil

Drifting Swamps

Born out of the mouth of the swamps in the northeastern continent of the known world, Drifting Swamps, is a small town built out of the need of a group of explorers to find residence during a major storm. Originally built as a short term encampment while the storm raged, it became a permanent settlement when the storm relocated the five ships of the expedition into the tree filled swamps, preventing them from returning to the sea. The ships, while mostly intact, are marooned together among the trees of the swamp. In addition, the explorers are well equiped with tools as they were planning on founding a new colony, only not intending it to be in a swamp.   Eventually walkways were constructed betweeen the ships, thining the trees between them and using the resulting wood for the construction. Additional platforms were built with huts well above the swamps below.   The ships are well protected from most of the creatures as they are sitting above waterline in the trees. However, snakes are frequently killed on the ships, providing an additional source of food. Several years ago, one of the ships was destroyed by a rampaging pyrohydra leaving most of the inhabitants dead and the ship in ashes before the rest of the ships could destroy the beast.   Hunting parties go out daily looking for meat or edible vegetation. Catfish, alligator, various lizards, deer, and fruit are all on the diet now.   A few years ago, another explorer band came by the swamps, and trade was established with the rest of Karenth. Now they trade exotic leathers for much needed supplies. The people of Drifting Swamps are now in a third generation and have no interest in leaving. From time to time a member of the community will head back to one of the main cities looking for supplies or to trade. A few people have even immigrated to other cities as life in the swamp is difficult.
